It has always been my art practise to respond to Pacific Collections as the basis in formulating a contemporary narrative. With Bula Figure 13 Series Tasi I have used contemporary media to re-interpret the works. They are a commentary on the political relationship between Aotearoa and Fiji and reflection on the Fijian soldiers from the recent coups in Fiji.

Michel Tuffery studies the history of Pacific material culture and is often inspired by what he discovers. In Fiji, remarkable dishes were carved in the shape of a man in order to carry coconut oil used at special cultural ceremonies. The artist is aware that the Auckland Museum holds two of these extremely rare votive bowls (Oldman Collection) and has updated them with an aluminum casting.
