The photographic series, Déjeuner, came about from an immediate opportunity that presented itself, when my friends and family were travelling overseas on a short-term basis. I was interested in the decisions they have made in their homes and to see what they have adopted from the culture and environment where they now live.

The domestic interiors The House of Manu and The House of Tiatia are both taken in Christchurch, New Zealand. The family homes of sons who have travelled to Europe to fulfil their rugby careers, as time passed the interiors became filled with photographs and sporting achievements to acknowledge the presence of the absent sons.

此系列攝影作品〈早餐〉是在我的朋友與家人旅居國外之時(大致上是短期的居留)所創作的,當時我正巧有這樣現成的機緣而可進行拍攝。我對他們對於居家內部所做的各種決定深感興趣,也很想瞭解他們從居住地的文化與環境中選取了什麼。

這兩件居家內部的攝影作品〈馬努的家〉與〈提亞提亞的家〉都是攝於紐西蘭的基督城,家中的男孩已旅居歐洲去實現他們的橄欖球生涯,當時光漸逝,居家內部轉而充滿了照片與運動功績,成為缺席兒子的在場證明。

Many Pacific men and women acknowledge that professional sport can provide them with career choices that did not even exist one generation ago. The growth of sport as a full-time vocation has influenced the lives of many Polynesian people, both within New Zealand and throughout the Pacific Islands. By revealing how closely the Tiatia family has been involved with sport, this living room view indicates the outstanding success the Tiatia son has achieved through playing rugby since his youth.

許多太平洋地區的男性與女性都認可職業運動能為他們提供不同的生涯選擇,那是一世代前尚未存在的。不論在紐西蘭或太平洋諸島,許多玻里尼西亞人的生活都因為某些運動成為全職性職業而受到影響。為了呈現提亞提亞一家與運動的密切關連,這個起居室影像顯示提亞提亞家的男孩自年少起便開始打橄欖球而能獲至今日卓越的成就。

By mixing the traditions of snapshot and documentary photography, Edith Amituanai explores the migration of photographic styles from the private to the public domain. Both The House of Manu and The House of Tiatia are as much at home portraits of families as they are portraits of rooms that enshrine the sporting achievements of family members. By being specific about the connections between living at home and offshore, Amituanai creates images, which reveal the cultural continuity of an on-going Samoan diaspora.

艾蒂絲‧雅蜜杜雅奈以快拍與記錄性攝影混雜呈現的方式,探索攝影風格自私人範疇轉向公開領域的嬗變轉移。〈馬努的家〉與〈提亞提亞的家〉既是家庭的居家照片,也是展現家庭成員運動成就的室內景照片。雅蜜杜雅奈所創作的影像聚焦於家鄉與海外生活之間的關連,將持續外移的薩摩亞移民的文化延續問題揭露出來。

This photograph was made in the home of a Samoan relative of the artist. The title alludes not only to the carved sign but to all people born during the 1980s who have now been described as the Generation Y. Edith Amituanai celebrates the contemporary lives of her Samoan relatives as people who care for their extended family both in New Zealand and in their Samoan 'homeland'. A broadcast from Samoa's state television is showing an American cowboy and western movie.

Many homes in Samoa show how influential the Island tradition of interior decoration has become. Textiles, frequently printed with designs incorporating flowers, are frequently used to both cover and decorate western style seating. Polished vinyl flooring and doormats help keep homes clean and cool. The layout of the room has been made deliberately welcoming for guests, which is not at all surprising considering that this is a room where guests to the Christian Minister's domestic office wait before entering his manse for their personal meeting.

This view from a living room to a dining room is in the home of one of Edith Amituanai's Samoan relatives. The oriental style room divider is somewhat inexplicable in this context. The hanging garlands and 21st birthday keys are typical decorations in many Samoan homes.
